Rizzle Kicks – the duo that has had everyone talking since they first made their mark on the music scene with album “Stereo Typical”; featuring wordplay that’s catching onto everyone’s playlists.

The Brighton-born Jordan Stephens and Alexander-Sule have reached top ten in the charts and are bound to bring their tongue-in-cheek to 53 Degrees this March.

They have caused controversy amongst the music critics and although their album cover may look like a prison photograph; they are actually amongst the most talented duo’s in the charts.
The combination of vocals and hip-hop beats create the duo’s energetic hype within the music industry; talking popular culture and infectious rhythms.

Fresh off the back of sell-out UK, US and Australian tours comes world renowned dubstep phenomenon known simply as NERO.

Reverberating basslines and powerful vocals have pushed this band to extreme success through number one hit ‘Promises’ which topped the charts in August 2011.

For NERO it’s not all about being mainstream though – The two faces behind NERO’s beginnings are Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray, who were both born in 1984 and spent their childhood in suburbia as a teen duo producing electronic and jungle based tracks in a London bedroom, inspiring earlier remixes such as ‘Blinded By The Lights’ which still brings old school back into the mix and hits hard in clubs worldwide.

Nero's debut release as a duo was "Space 2001" as part of the "Straight Outta Leicester" three piece vinyl LP on Reformed Recordings in 2004. Years of dedication to the practice of mixing the heaviest dubstep beats lead to the duo’s debut album ‘Welcome Reality’ being released in 2011, straight in at number one.

The award winning collaboration that saw Nero join forces with Example proved successful as the chart-topping 2011 single "Stay Awake" was produced.

In a 35-year-long career, Adam Ant has celebrated 10 top ten singles and a lifetime of head-turning headlines.

After battling with mental illness, Adam Ant is back at 53 Degrees, Preston this weekend.

It's an exciting month to be a UCLan student (you never thought you'd hear it, did you?) as our favourite bands are hitting our most visited venue, 53 Degrees. With bands like the Pigeon Detectives and critically acclaimed artists like Professor Green hitting our campus, it's an un-missable term here in Preston.

And also this November, is 90s sell out Yuck.

The quartet may have been in nappies when Indie music first hit off, but it's now in its prime ready to showcase the authentic twist of perfect harmonies and catchy melodies with this London masterpiece.

I love the 90s. Ok, it's probably because I've lived through the mushroom hair styles and the pop-world phenomina that was SClub, but also because the sound is relived through many bands of today, and no more than the London four-piece, Yuck.

Yuck have sailed through the press since 2009, whey they first formed, with rarely a bad review. Being London school pals, it's an obvious carefree career for the talented foursome with a connection Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams could only be jealous of.

For a group that have perfomed few gigs, Yuck are fastly becoming nationally acknowledged. Fronted by 20-year-old Daniel Blumberg (Cajun Dance Party), the band are here at 53 Degrees to master the Indie Sound with a fresh 90s twist.

Guitar Heavy Anthems are at the heart of their music, with classics like "Georgia" and "Get Away".

The post-modern era in which we reluctantly live in offers an unoriginal sound, but Yuck have surprisingly proved that the 90s kids do it best with their authentic guitars and brilliant melodies.

Yuck are undoubtedly a breath of fresh air that will be lived throughout the crowds at 53 Degrees this month. Be sure not to miss it.

Professor Green has really hit it off this year. As his album “At Your Inconvenience” was released in the shops this week, I eagerly awaited the highly anticipated album of the year. His collaboration with Emeli Sande has put him in the running for single of the year, I hope, as this album ticks every box on the list.

He’s got the appeal, let’s face it, with his cheeky charm and loudly addressed lyrics. “Alive till I’m Dead” made it to number two in 2010, and now he’s back and better with his lyrically powerful album. Professor Green shows the darkest days of his father’s suicide along with his profound success through his strongly worded lyrics.

Clearly conquering the urban scene, Professor Green is sure to top the album charts this week.

He lets go of his usual persona in this album, and let’s down the guard with some of the most powerful lyrics he’s ever conceived. “Read all about it” feels like an explicit confession of expectation and loss.

The Hackney MC has definitely not lost his original edge, despite what the critics are saying. I personally think it’s an album of commendable confessions that only few artists dare to touch on.

It’s a painful twist of irony “Read all about It”, as the critics are complaining about the album. But he’s got his name on mainstream and fought against the odds and this Hackey MC ain’t going anywhere.

A controversial figure, a major television personality and full-time swear-er...it’s only Shaun Ryder.

Fresh outta the jungle comes our all time favourite Shaun Ryder. He showed a heart behind the stereotype in the jungle, and now he’s back to showcase his talents at 53 Degrees on Wednesday 30th November.

Not only renowned for his Happy Mondays days, he’s also a multi-talented, well loved television personality, author, columnist and actor.

Born on August 23rd, 1962, in Little Hulton, Greater Manchester, Shaun Ryder has become a critically acclaimed musical talent. Since the Happy Mondays break up in 1992, Ryder battled against depression and drug addiction before coming back into the spotlight in 1995 with “Black Grape”.

The artist came back with a vengeance and topped the British Album chart and created several hit singles.

After a successful comeback, Ryder’s second album failed in the media’s eye and the group split after only two years, in 1997.

Since The Happy Mondays and Black Grape, Ryder has gone from struggling for success to becoming one of the most controversal people of his time.

Ryder joined forces with Trigger and Jim on their 1999 comeback MC Hammer and Sickle, taken part in two reformations of the Happy Mondays, had a successful solo career, took part in BBC documentary “The Ecstasy and the Agony” which showed his heartbreaking struggle with drugs and collaborated with Gorillaz on the UK Number 1 hit “Dare”.

After coming second in the ITV show “I’m a Celebrity” get me outta here, the only thing Ryder has done since is get back in there with both the public and the media.

The man behind the hats, the cigarettes and the swearing is here to broadcast his talents at 53 this November...be sure not to miss it.

The stage was alive with the sound of You Me At Six last Saturday Night, as the band kick-started their UK Tour with a bang.

It's been one of the most crucial turning points in their career this week; set for number one, their sell out tour well and truly on the road and their album selling fastly - You Me At Six are back.

The atmosphere was immense; with You Me At Six set to get their number one album and with 53 being completely sold out, it was set for an electrifying evening of guitars and bass.

I entered the gig not in the best of moods; it had been throwing it down with rain (typical Preston) and I was queuing all the way from the library. I got in the taxi from my house and the driver said: “Off to see that shit band are we?” Ha, if only he’d heard it.

“I came from Liverpool to see You Me At Six tonight and it was so worth it – my favourite had to be “Underdog”, said 19-year-old Sophie.

“It was simply amazing.”

As the mosh pits got fuller and the sweat began to drip from the dedicated fans faces, the crowds chanted for the bands arrival through “Loverboy” lyrics. Described as the new face of Indie-punk, replacing the repeated sound of Blink 182, “The Consequence” began to echo throughout the venue.

The gig began with their latest album release, Take off Your Colours”, cleverly mixed with their older tracks that got the crowd singing back the lyrics to their punk-rock heroes. Their gig in Preston was well and truly off to an amazing start; with dedicated teenagers alive with their music and even the older members of the crowd seemed to be reliving their mosher days.

Next came their newer tracks, that continued to keep the audience on their feet. It was clearly a sell out, as I came out with more bruises than I could account for.

Every teenagers favourite was up next. It brought out the heart of the audience and everyone sung out the lost loved lyrics of "Stay with Me". We clearly had "A lot to say".

To end the night came "Underdog" - the song that got the band on the railings and the mosh pit in a frenzy. Everyone belted out the lyrics and it left everyone leaving the gig on a high note.

Ironically, Underdog ended the night but that's exactly what they've worked against this week.

Well Done You Me At Six - you're back in the game to success.

Ska-punk monsters. Political activists. The Clash and the Specials' love child; Sonic Boom Six are unique to say the least...

The Manchester fivesome are an exciting bunch who like to sing about revolution and social observation. They yell, they dance, they spit protest in your face...and have a good time doing it.

This explosive ska band are bringing their reprobate attitude to 53 Degrees on Sunday 23^rd October, where we'll hear all the hits from their appropriately named compilation album, “Rude Awakening”.

Fan favourites, “Monkey See, Monkey Do”, and “Piggy in the Middle”, will have you bouncing all night to their stroppy and juvenile brilliance. It's time to forget the manners that your nan taught you and get angry.

Lovers of The King Blues and The Streets would be stupid to miss this one – SB6 are fast and fun, doing justice to their ska forefathers and standing out among their contemporaries with hardcore brass speed and grimy witticisms.

SB6 continue to make original and energetic music since their birth in 2002 by harbouring the raw sound of punk and the gritty realism of early hip hop. So make like 1977 and pogo to the furious gaieties of SB6 at 53 Degrees this October.

2011 is the year for Indie with the Kooks, Wombats and The View all playing some of the best releases of the past decade. The unique sound of the Indie scene is often missed; with the classic downfall of becoming “far too mainstream for the Indie eye”. But the Pigeon Detectives have never jumped on the bandwagon of mainstream status, which in my opinion is why they are so successful.

The Yorkshire five-piece have produced some of the biggest and most loved classics since they formed in 2004.

Having performed on the NME stage at Reading and Leeds Festival, the band has been championed for their original sounding chords and brilliant dynamics.

I can’t help but feel the Pigeon Detectives are in the shadows of the music scene all too often; they supported Dirty Pretty Things, Kaiser Chiefs and performed to thousands at T in the Park. They are undoubtedly a likeable band; championed for their crowd-pleasing live performances, yet chart success has always been missed.

“The bands crunching guitar is simple but effective”, says Camden Evening News.

Calling all quirky, adolescent teenagers, all indie-punk lovers and those who have always wanted to meet the band who mixed comedy with rock ‘n’ roll – well, meet Art Brut.

Eddie Argos (Vocals), Jasper Future (Guitar), Ian Catskillkin (Lead Guitar), Freddy Feedback (Bass Guitar) and Mikey B on Drums make up this brilliantly constructed confrontational music style on stage.

They are the Adams Family of the music scene. They are a spanner in the stereotype and far from your usual headphone choice, but they are brilliant.

The fact they sing a song called “Martin Kemp” pretty much sums up the random nature of their song choices; but their talent nevertheless shines through with the catchy riffs and drunken ramble that make up this five-piece band.

Controversially charming; Art Brut offer an eccentric and unconventional slant on the music scene.

Eddie Argos, the vocalist, is cleverly self-indulgent as he adolescently vocalises his humorous stories of sex and rock ‘n’ roll. Love them or hate them; they are bound to cause a stir at 53 Degrees this October.

Lyrically sarcastic; Argos clearly has a wry sense of humor. With tracks like “Moving to L.A” and “Lost Weekend”, he proves sounding hung-over during an interview is perfectly acceptable.

“Brilliant! Tragic”, their latest album, has produced the likes of “Clever Clever Jazz”, “Bad Comedian” and “Sexy Sometimes”. The background music juxtaposed with Argos’s hoarse-sounding, verging sinister voice adds to the almost arty-feel the music creates.
“Martin Kemp Welch Five A-Side Football Rules” covers the usual sardonic take on their school boy crushes and football days.

If you want to see a different side to music; a side that hasn’t been seen before, then get yourself to 53 Degrees on Friday 14th October for a night of brashly bizarre lyrics and carefully constructed culture-shockers.

Their album “Brilliant! Tragic!” sums up the realm of public opinion they create. Are they brilliant? Or are they tragic?

First up in the Freshers 2011 line-up is You Me At Six; causing 'fireworks' when they headline their talents at 53 Degrees on 8TH OCTOBER 2011.

I love the sound of You Me At Six. I've got a lot to say, and I won't push You Me At Six away this October, for sure.

The melancholic sound of ‘Fireworks’ to the punk-rock cover of Lady Gagas’ “Pokerface”; we’ll “find it hard to breathe” at 53 Degrees when they hit the stage with their punk-rock days mixed with their alterative twist.

They speak in lyrics of lost love and strum with sinister tones.

You Me At Six are a 5 man band from Weybridge, Surrey, who formed in 2005. They played local gigs like Leeds Cockpit before headlining major clubs in the music scene. They have acquired critically acclaimed accreditation from the media and music industry and have been championed by the likes of Kerrang and NME.

They have supported the likes of Paramore and Fall Out Boy. They have battled against the stereotype of “indie v mainstream” and are ready to once again headline their talents at 53 Degrees.

Pulling the heartstrings of the audience and forcing crowds into the battle-of-the-front-row with “The Consequence” of their amazing sounds; it’s one not to miss. I'm not usually one for lyrics of teenage angst such as "I don't know who I am", but their lyrics speak louder than drums.

Give them a listen on youtube; you'll fall in love with their "Countagious Chemistry".

They are certainly doing something right. Thousands have been to see them since their release of their new album this year, 'Take off your Colours'.

Check them out in October at 53 Degrees; you won't be disappointed.

The Ark Magazine Preston breaks away with a new website launch!

Preston Music magazine launches new website for showcasing local music talent

THE Ark Preston- a monthly music magazine delivering the best in unsigned and undiscovered music in Preston and the surrounding areas - launches its brand new website on Monday!

The Ark Preston dot com launches 8pm on Monday July 11 after 12 months of printed publication and being a branch of the Ark - a national project to increase the profile on unsigned music.

The new website will feature artist interviews; gig reviews; album EP and single reviews; band profiles, as well as up to date news of all things music in Preston. On top f that we will be running competitions foe gig and festival tickets, and there will be more multimedia content and evry gig in Preston will be listed.

We've teamed up with JDG media, a buisness ran by UCLan journalism graduate James Gordon, to launch the new site.

Our main focus will still be on local music, no matter what genre. We will also be broadening our scope onto out of town acts that play in this city. As for the printed magazine, that will stay on the shelves but will now circulate every three months with special print-only content. The new issue will be out in September 2011.

Ark Preston's editor Graeth Butterworth said: "This is a great milestone for the Ark Preston. We're breaking away from the shackles of any national manipulation which wasn't as prolific or productive as we wanted it to be."

"It's a boring cliche that this city hears all the time, but this is just what Preston needs. There are genuinely some top musicians in this area and I won't be alone in saying once one takes off the rest will shortly follow."

The magazine has announced the line up of it's next event to coincide with the launch. Mazes, signed to FatCat records and fresh from their U.S tour will headline the gig at Mad Ferret on Friday 12th August. Main support will come from Rae Morris - watch her now before you see her from a distance in an arena. Also on the bill is Brown Brogues from Manchester and Preston's own Newspaper Joe.

Gareth added: "The Ark Preston will continue to run it's own events, bringing in an out of town bands with hype and letting local acts support on the night to what will be a big crowd."

"in terms of the site, I want it to be a hub for music in Preston. Anyone into music should go to the site for events, news and the latest releases in Preston. It doesn't have to be a site for those interested in the local musicians, even though that is our primary scope."

It's all about Post-grunge and party music. Yes the muddy funsters, Yuck, are coming to 53 Degrees to show off their brilliant dirty pop sound this Autumn. Yuck will perform their self-titled debut album on 21^st November 2011, delivering their exciting throwback to 90s shoegaze and grunge.

Lyrically sensitive, gentle guitars and four amazing guys...it can only be Athlete back at 53 Degrees this summer.

Back in 2003 Brit-pop was dying. Coldplay played out their pianos and fresh new artists were somewhat lacking. But then Athlete came back with their album Vehicles & Animals.

They have some pleasingly up-beat tracks yet still inhabit their "Wires" days. Their intimate tracks are exactly what they want to achieve - a successful boy-band with humility and modesty are hard to find, which is why Athlete are a credit to the music scene.

From the melancholic sound of "Wires" to the earnest sound of "Tourist", Athlete show a likable rarity in their lyrics.

Athlete are proof that Ke$ha can be knocked out of teenagers headphones. A few years back Athlete's "Wires" was on repeat, so it may be unlikely that they are ready to churn Gaga's bank-balance, but they are certainly back on the music scene here at 53 Degrees on 28th July. If you like musical talent and voices that are a sort-of mix of Coldplay and Snow Patrol, then be sure to enjoy their music here at 53 Degrees.

They naturally satisfy my boy-band appetite, but they are certainly better than most of the trash on my I-pod. "Superhuman Touch" echoes the struggles the band have faced in the last few years and fully deserve their upcoming tour to be a sell-out.

Their music reaches a lyrical climax with tracks like "The Awkward Goodbye" and "Don't Hold Your Breath" and they are amongst the strongest tracks Athlete have ever composed.

They have certainly reached a domestic success in the past with their out-selling albums "Vehicles and Animals" and "Tourist" and they are back once again in 2011 ready to record their new album and out-sell their upcoming tour dates.

It's often hard to imagine poetry mixing with the rock era. In fact, we usually associate poems with romantic language and those dreaded 'List of threes'. But John Cooper Clarke proves that the punk-rock era can beautifully mix poetic lyrics of politics, love and angst with his shaggy hair and drainpipe jeans.

He may start his poems phlegmatically, but he captures the emotion of his audience with poetry about anything from STDs to alcoholism.

John Cooper Clarke is an idol of his time and a unique yet enthralling role-model for our own. He doesn't grab crowd surfers and he certainly doesn't gain the typical-gig-like affect of say the Libertines, but he captivates audiences in a truly magical way with his satisfying lyrical lines.

John Cooper Clarke appears like a man out of time. He is stick thin, dressed in shiny black boots, tight black straights, sharpe shirt and buttoned up Sixties jacket, topped off with impenetrable Raybans and an enormous, spiky, dyed black barnet. At 62, Clarke is wrinkled, his lips have shrunk, and his teeth are full of bits of gold, but otherwise he looks exactly the same as when he was the poet laureate of punk, the self-styled bard of Salford, a comic wordsmith witrh almost household name status.

"You know what I like to think of myself as? Adam Adamant," Clarke declares, recalling the short-lived BBC series from 1966 about a Victoria adventurer in swinging London.

'They chip him out of a block of ice, he used to work for the secret service just before the end of the Crimean War, and he comes into modern London with his Victoria value system. He goes into a Wimpy bar: 'May I see the wine list?' being au fait with technology and 'down with the kids' will only takes you so far. There's a rich vein of humour being a Luddite."

Clarke has such a precise way of enuciating things, with twists of emphasis in his rich Mancunian accent, that everything he saye sounds like a routine. "At the begining, there was no chance I'd get published so I thought I'd give it a go live. I had to perform in rock band places and working mens clubs, where you wouldn't expect to find poetry. I ploughed a lonely furrow."

Punk put him on the map. "Lyrics became important for a while in the late Seventies. Patti Smith was a poet and a rock star, as much as the other, the distinctions were a bit blurred and then you get swept up in it. Punk poet, it's a good enough term.

Asked about the future, "It'll be more of the same only more so," he laughs. Contemplating his position in British comedy and poetry, his lost years, the possibilities of the future, Clarke can only smile. "I don't know the answer. What I do is the most organic thing in the world. It could only have turned out this way. Like it or not, it could only have turned out this way."

FRANCESQA have recently wrapped up their first proper headline tour of the UK and with a re-release of their 'We Live' EP out now, it's about time we caught up with them to find out what is going down.....

Hi there, please state your name and role in Francesqa.

Hi my name's Tom and I play guitar in Francesqa.

By now you've wrapped up the final dates of your headline tour with The Dangerous Summer. How was your overall experience?

The tour was incredible, I don't really think there were any low points or bad shows for us; we anjoyed every night. It was our first real experience of headlining a whole tour and we definetly loved it, the crowds were just mind blowing.

How much did your body and mind take a pounding on this tour?

We've been lucky this time to tour in relative comfort; we've had hotels every night and a great crew to help us out. Even so, playing shows every night for 15 days straight takes it out of you. But now we are going back to the studio to continue writing to so no real break.

What was your daily Nados intake on this tour?

Is it bad that I didn't have Nados at all? I'm not really a fan to be honest, I don't see the appeal. I know that The Dangerous Summer guys ate a whole lot of Nados though! I think our guys had a little!

It seems like things have been a constant climb for you guys in the last twelve months-from being picked by Tom Delong to open Slam Dunk Festival to being voted Best British Newcomer in both Kerrang! and Rock Sound in particular turning point over the last twelve months where you thought 'OK this is all starting to work out'

It's been alot of hard work definetly yes, a constant climb. For me personally I'd say thus headlining tour has showed me just how far things have come, you can only gauge it so far from doing support slots, so to do a headline tour and realise that we've got so many fans it's amazing. Obviously we've got a long way to go. Our attitude towards the band and our music is very forward thinking; we're always looking ahead to the next thing- be it a new song or the next show -we want things to improve every day. It's been an amazing journey so we hope it continues!

Dirty rhyme and grime is the sound of Dagenham's Devlin. Expect a performance of gritty social hip hop and aggressive, heartfelt songs from his debut album Bud, Sweat and Beers at 53 Degrees on 17th May 2011. The 21 year-old rapper is a young and ambitious MC who spits talent and wit into every verse of his songs.

From the romantic Runaway to the brash beats of Brainwashed, Devlin shows himself to be a lyrically original and cocky artist, creating a picture of excitement and harsh realism in every performance.

"You better recognise my name just like your family members

My flow's so tremendous shining like a thousand embers

We came to take over your town 'til every man surrenders

And kidnap your vocabulary until my name is all that man remembers"

Heaviliy influenced by garage music and East-London grime, Devlin was inspired at a young age to get involved with the grime scene, and joined the group Outakers in 2004. It wasn't long until he began to make a name for himself locally on pirate radio stations. Devlin expressed his feelings creatively through the sketchy, yet dark and innovatvie mix-tape, Tales from the Crypt, which toils with themes of sex, violence, and drugs.

Devlin is BBC's sound of 2010, and his new, dirty sound is coming to Preston this May. You'd be a fool to miss out on this one.

Does Superman wear blue tights? Are you the business? - Yes you are John Cooper Clarke.

Master of Punk-literature and poetry, John Cooper Clarke, will be performing at 53 Degrees this summer on Friday 27th May, showcasing his satirical poetry and shaggy hair.

Known as "the bard of Salford", Lancashire born Johnny Clarke has stormed the UK with his drainpipes, winter sunglasses and heeled boots.

He may be so skinny he looks snapable, but his poems speak louder messages than Janet Street-Porter at a press conference.

Since Punk arrived in 1976, Clarke supported big names such as Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks and Siouxsie. Marking his name on the cards, he soon started headlining his own tours; leading him to become one of the most influential poets of his generation.

On paper John Cooper Clarke doesn't have parent appeal. After battling with drug addiction and a failed marriage, his poetry captivates crowds and astounds audiences across the UK with his biting, comical and political motives.

He's certainly not your average GCSE poet; he doesn't write about soil (Seamus Heaney) and he doesn't use metaphors which are like working out a maths problem. He writes in clear, exciting rumbles.

Claiming it was his English teacher that initially inspired his passion, Clarke was brought up with the Liverpool Beat poetry scene. He says (to all potential writers): "Write about what you know and through that you will discover your own style".

"Part-time poet, Full-time Loser", Johnny Clarke, may be in his sixties but he is far from past it. In 2010, John played the "Crossing the Border" festivals in Holland and Belgium, alongside his UK Tour. As they say - life begins at 60 (well it certainly doesn't end here for this Punk Legend).

Inpirational. Individual. Irreplaceable. These are the only three words I could think of to sum up John Cooper Clarke, without mentioning his scary resemblance to Sweeney Todd.

Yes he's back, Jon Fratelli is returning to 53 Degrees. After first visiting us in November 2008 with his band The Fratellis, Jon is making a much anticipated comeback on 3rd June 2011 where he will debut his solo album, Psycho Jukebox.

The brilliant rambunctious chatters of Costello Music and Here We Stand can still be heard on Jon's latest release, however here he offers an album of bright maturity. Psycho Jukebox is chock full of energy and dynamic sounds that will make you want to throw your hands up in the air faster than you can say Florence Welch; it mixes pop-psychedelica with infectious 60s grooves to make for a great listen.

Since the Fratellis went on hiatus after July 2009's Hop Farm Festival, we have heard little from the boys - the minds that came up with indie-club classics like Henrietta and Chelsea Dagger have laid dormant for some time now, but Jon Fratelli is rested and ready to erupt all over 2011 with his confident solo debut.

Punk-Rock Legend, John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), has announced UK gigs and their Gulifest slot for Public Image LTD. With Lu Edmonds on guitar, Bruce Smith on drums and Scott Firth on bass, it's set to be an immortal night of angry strumming and electrifying crowds.

Following the Sex Pistols' break-up in 1978, John Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten, has regained his punk status with his band, PiL.

They will headline 53 Degrees this summer on Tuesday 7th June.

Not only will this be a unique and enthralling experience by the critically acclaimed Public Image LTD, but 53 Degrees are the only venue to hold a gig in the North West that showcases their adolescent and experimental sound with tracks such as "Public Image" (This was an instant classic), "This Is Not A Love Song" (No - it's country life butter), "Rise", and "Warrior" (he is clearly a trooper after serving time in the Jungle).

The sardonic and wicked-step-mom persona of Johnny Rotten has become a "public machine"
of thoughts and opinion. But despite this "rotten" reputation, the band sings political rants about love, loss and public opinion.

Lydon's 1979 poignant response to his mother's death meant "Death Disco" was a concert favorite and scope for new fans.

Prepare for a lurid mix of horns and howling strings as Villagers perform the haunting sounds of their debut, Becoming a Jackal, at 53 Degrees. On 9th May Conor J O' Brien's Irish acoustic band promise to dazzle us with their morbid optimisim and chiming heartbreak at 53 Degrees, with a performance that will not disappoint.

Becoming a Jackal skilfully wavers through scenes of simple domesticity and ghostly solitude: "I was a dreamer/ staring at windows/ Out on to the main street/ 'Cos that's where the dream goes" cries O' Brien in album named track Becoming a Jackal.

Eerie track Pieces, with its droning organs, and the earthy acoustic The Pact (I'll be your fever) are equally brililant; Villagers' debut will be an un-missable performance.

And it's no wonder that the Mercury prize nominated album has been described as a "record of great charm and mystery".

With album opener I saw the dead, which leaks sincerity, it's easy to see why: "Have you got just a minute?/ Are you easily led?/ Let me show you the backroom/ Where I saw the dead/ Dancing like children on a midsummer morn/ And they asked me to join".

Villagers' Becoming a Jackal is an atmospheric explosion of acoustic sound and heartbreak. If the record sounds this damn good, then live this May we are in for a treat.

Nothing beats live music - especially when crowd jumping gigs like Francesqa set out the scene for an epic night.

"Francesqa" will be headlining 53 Degrees, when they hit the road on Tuesday 10th May with their latest tour of the UK.

The fresh sound of their guitars will be heard by hundreds of us at 53 Degrees; where their latest chart-topping album "We Lived" will get us all fighting for our place at the front. (We've all been there, got the bruises and willing to do it over and over again for bands like these).

After forming in 2009, the band was chosen by our all time favourite Blink 182's Tom Delonge, to attend the Slam Dunk Festival that will take place later in 2011.

The band has clearly made their mark in the British Indie scene, after selling out their tour in 2010.

Their latest track, "Ghosts" will no doubt be a festival favourite, with its' Paramore affect and blink-182 "miss you" feel. (But don't bring the tissues; although lead singer Ashley Wilkie is 100% set to break a few girls' hearts that night).

Clearly destined to be played on mainstream radio on a regular basis, the catchy tunes like "years" (sounds like an American Anthem) and "Crooked little sun" are sure to be on everyone's IPod's this year.

These boys clearly have it all; with Ashley Wilkie on vocals, Ben Hordos on bass, Joe Hicks and Tom Millar on guitar and Warren Senior on drums - they have the looks, the voices and the guitar.

DIOYY-Don't Say We Didn't Warn You (Album Review)

The sun is shining, there's not a cloud in the sky, and the smell of freshly cut grass fills the air. This can only mean one thing. Summer is on the way. With summer and sunshine comes the music that perfectly fits in with the warm weather. In that case, Does It Offend You, Yeah? 's second album Don't Say We Didn't Warn You, comes at the perfect time. The Reading based band are releasing the album fresh from two stints supporting Linkin Park in America.

The album doesn't show much of a movement from the dub-heavy sounds of the first album, apart from wavering slightly closer to hip-hop. Opening track, 'We Are The Dead', pretty much starts off where debute album 'You Have No Idea What You Are Getting Yourself Into' left off, with chants, electronic craziness and steep changes in tempo.

Next track, 'John Hurt' kicks off with some eerie beeping, and vocals sung through gritted teeth. This album seems to be a lot more angry than it's predecessor and this is shown most on 'John Hurt', with vocals shouted over a cacophony of riff and distortion heavy guitars.#

'Pulled Out My Insides' is the poppiest of the tracks by far, and wouldn't sound out of place on Top Of The Pops. The song has you on the edge of your seat as you wait for the sweet, jingly guitars and soft vocals to be desecrated by a wall of sound, but it never comes. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The pop sound doesn't last for long however, and next effort, simply titled Yeah! takes the album away from Top Of The Pops and closer to the BBC show, Doctor Who. Again, it is creepy sci-fi sound brings the song in, before another deluge of electronic beats, dubs and riffs that almost make your ears bleed. This is a song that can be blasted out of open windowson warm evening, make no doubt about that. But make the windows a space ship............

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT.......

Matthew Pryderi Pritchard from Cardiff, is a professional skateborder and one quater of the Dirty Sanchez crew, who have their own show on MTV and who have also appeared on Channel 4's Balls Of Steel with Pancho as the Pain Men.

Dirty Sanchez's Pritchard is often seen as the founder of Dirty Sanchez, along with Lee Dainton, with whom he filmed the skating bootleg 'Pritchard Vs Dainton' , where the two were in competition against each other at skating, as well as hitting and playing pranks on each other, the basis for the Dirty Sanchez programme. He and Lee went on to appear on MTV's 'Wrecked' which follows the same format.....but with more extreame pranks and stunts. Pritchard and Dainton now travel across the country and the world, playing to packed out audiences and bringing some of the most extream pranks live to stage......

Pritchard Vs Dainton Live in Acrington last week was as per usual OFF the hook. It's weird cause when I got told we were playing Acrington it took me back to the days of that TV milk advert with those 2 kids talking about Acrington Stanley Football Club. We were totally looking forward to it as we had never been or played Acrington before. We arrived at our hotel which was a lovely 4 star golf resort and greated with a red carpet complete with a puddle of piss in the middle haha! Checked in and then headed to the club, as we hit back stage room I've got to say it was probably the best ridder we have had in a long time. Plenty of booze and even a box of push pops! ha! Good gig, good crowd and a good party. Hotel bound to follow the carnage in my room again.....2 hours sleep and downstairs for brekkie only to be greated with a big fat gypsy wedding! F**king hilarious end to a mental few hours....

Stand and Deliver Comedy Club Returns: Featured on BBC Radio Lancashire!

Stand and Deliver Lancashire's Largest Comedy Club returns again this Friday to 53 Degrees. As always we bring you the best comedians from the international circuit, right to the heart of Lancashire. The week Stand and Deliver was featured on BBC Radio Lancashire as part 'Graham Liver Stands Up for Comic Relief'. Graham "Laugh a Minute" Liver is raising money for Comic Relief. He has been challenged with becoming a Stand Up comic......

Can you imagine anything more terrifying than standing on stage trying to make people laugh?

Well that is the challenge breakfast presenter Graham Liver has taken on-and he wants your support!

For this year's Red Nose Day appeal he'll be raising money-and hopefully a few laughs-by learning the ropes, writing a routine, then performing it on stage in front of a paying crowd as part of Stand Up for Comic Relief.

As part of their comedy month, BBC Radio Lancashire came down to 53 Degrees, to meet the team who run Stand and Deliver and find out how things are run.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? New Album Out in March!!

The wait is almost over. The long anticipated second album from UK, dance-punk act Does It Offend You, Yeah? (DIOYY) is finally avaliable for pre-order on Amazon and iTunes. DIOYY first burst onto the dance-punk and new rave scenes in 2008 with their debute album 'You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into'. They've been compared to bands like Justice and Klaxons but it is their raucous live shows that set them apart from other bands in the genre.

The band played Exit Festival 2010 and blew the crowd away. None of the locals that were there had herd of DIOYY before the gig, but afterwards everyone was talking about them. Such is the live power of James Rushent on lead vocals and guitar; Rob Bloomfield on drums; Dan Coops on synthesizer; Matty Derham on guitar; and Chloe Duveaux on Bass that once you have seen them, you will never quite forget it.

Villagers' debut album has seen it's creative lynchpin, frontman Conor O'Brien, earn fantastic the dissolution of O'Brien's previous band, The Immediate, Villagers began their ascent with a number in October and they've since toured in support of Tindersticks and appeared on Later...with Jools Holland. O'Brien answers our questions.

Becoming a Jackal has certainly recieved it's share of plaudits-what sort of expectations did you, as the album creator, actually have for it? As a debut was it difficult to let go of, to assess from an objective perspective once others began to criticise it?

I never had any expectations for it, in terms of critical appraisal or other people's reactions. I did have hopes for the songs as I was writing them, but this was mostly along the lines of, "I hope my friend David likes this one; maybe I'll play with it for him when I see him next", or: "There's no food in the house. I hope I get this one finished before I get too hungry. I should go to the shops. Maybe I'll record a quick demo of it and listen to it on the way to the shops. I need to go to the toilet." It is difficult for me to let go of the album, but I'm okay with that. I don't think that there is such a thing as an "Objective perspective" when it comes to art. I know what it means to me, and I'm content with that.

Something frequently mentioned in coverage is how accoumplished these songs are for an artist of a young age. Presumably this isn't patronising you? As you've been in a band before, were these songs some years in the making before being collected here?
No, that is'nt patronising. All of the songs on the album were written in the period following the break-up of my previous band. I would sit down with an acoustic guitar and amke random noises with my mouth until they started assembling themselves into some sort of pattern or form. Sometimes this initial process would be very fast, but would be months and months of changes in arrangement ideas. So the song would keep folding in on itself. The song pieces for instance: this was written in 15 minutes, but I was still recording new demos of it a year later. The last few songs I wrote for the album, such as I Saw The Dead and Set The Tigers Free, were completed in a quicker fashion. I think I was gaining some sort of momentum.

How do you feel about some of the comparisons you have recieved, to artists such as Conor Oberst and the late Elliot Smith? Is this something you're able to hear yourself, or does modesty prevent you from even considering such things?
I feel fine about it. They've both written some very good songs so it's a nice thing for someone to say. I think perhaps that my songs are slightly more traditional than theirs, in terms of song structure and melody. This is neither a good nor bad thing, just different. Modesty would never prevent me from comparing them with other people's work. I've always had a lot of faith in my songs.

Overall, the mood of Becoming a Jackal is fairly sombre. Can we expect to see a shiner, happier Conor in the future? After all, all art is a product of circumstances, so presumably your head wasn't always in the sunniest place when writing this record?
I have absolutely no idea what future Villagers albums will sound like. If I had to release one tomorrow, it would be very quiet and very intimate. But this could change. I'm approaching all of this with my eyes closed. Art is a product of circumstance, but circumstances is a multi-faceted creature, as are you.

OMG! Ted's Band from Scrubs-THE BLANKS!!!! No instruments, No problem....

News flash: A cappella is hip! Leading this pack of cool is a quartet of friends, The Blanks, who appear on the worldwide synicated television show Scrubs as "Ted's Band". In a case of life imitating art (or is it art imitating life?), the group was written into the script as a quartet of friends who like to sing a cappella music. Bizarre, huh? Group member Sam Lloyd played the recurring role of character "Ted Buckland" on all nine seasons of Scrubs on NBC and later ABC, now airing on Comedy Central, TV Land, WGN, and a host of other local/region channels just in the US. Sam is joined by Paul F, George Miserlis and Philip McNiven. In 2004, The Blanks released their debut CD, "Riding the Wave" .

In 2008 they also made shirts. Based in Los Angeles, The Blanks perform and sing family-friendly (cool) entertainments with plenty of (hip) musical and sketch comedy. They sing a cappella versions of popular TV show theme songs. The only instrument besides a ukele you'll find on stage are talking toys-that's right, four grown men who still play with action figures. Not ones to rest on their laurels or teeter on the edge of rebellion and artistic bravado with their choices of deoderent commercials, The Blanks wrote some original numbers that sound like songs even they might want to cover! You haven't seen anything quite like it before. They love to sing, entertain and make people laugh, so their shows include skits, antics, choreography (the kind a 5-year old could memorize), talking toys as lead singers, and costume changes.

A note on costume changes: they're not Cher, and they're not Madonna. Because....They're men! Men who sing. Men who dance. Men who'll make the milk you're drinking spray right out your nose with a funny glance.

To tell the story of The Blanks is to tell the story of four unique individuals that didn't find each other through a reality show contest, Craigslist ads, Social Networking, or even the fallout of doomed bands fighting over the drummer's red M&M's (thus no drummer allowed.) Asked individually if this was their dream gig, they might hesitate, but as a collective whole it's pretty clear that there was some cosmic kismet at work.

As long as the kids dig it and the adults enjoy it, The Blanks will kepp singing it.......

It has been a log time since we've played a show. For the last two months we've been recording music for an 'album' that will come 'out' in the 'shops' sometime in the near 'future'. It's been so long that we went to play our instruments for the first time after a short Christmas break, our fingers all fell off when we tried to play. Yep, all of them. It was a set back but thankfully a friend of ours had 4 sets of human hands that once belonged to real authentic WWE WWrestlers. So we've ended up with hands that are stronger and more efficient that the ones we've had before-but we are prone to punching women, and we have no control over it. They're so pumped with steriods that they have actual brains of their own. But, it means we can play again- so aggresive, chauvinistic fists it has to be. Also-Aggressive Chauvinistic Fist would be a great name for a metal band. I've claimed it, so don't try and steal it.

So, on a cold winter morning in Glasgow (Wednesday the 19th of January 2011 to be very precise, at the Woodlands Road Sainsbury Garage to be exact) we all climbed back in the van to start our first headline tour in just under a year. Within five minutes we all remember that travelling in a van isn't much fun really. I managed to sleep in a range of interesting positions during the four hour journey to Hull for our first gig. At one point I think my head may have been in danger of being ripped off my neck-but somehow I still manage to get back to sleep. That's commitment. Soon enough we arrived at the venue, which was an old market street that had been turned into a creative 'creative area'. That basically means they'll put loads of pointless art installations on the street, and people will be too scared to say they don't like them. We were playing a venue called 'Fruit'. Why was it called Fruit? Because it used to be a fruit market. GENIUS.

Population Four:

The Preston five who won the Battle of the Bands have conquered Lancashire and now want to rock the world.

Population Four have played in practically every pub in Preston and now they are travelling throughout the UK to promote their EP 2009. They are hoping to make it big so they can give up their day jobs and stamp out their early starts. The band talk about rocking it out, after show sweat and how Rick nearly died on a shoot.

How did you get together?

We've all been active in the local music scene and so we had come to know one another through our different exploits over the years.

What the Population Four sound?

We do what we know and what we know is rock music. We're a rock band in the same vain as Alexisonfire, Rise Against, local success story Failsafe, Lostprofets and bands of that ilk. Our band sounds like we're having a great time. That's the most important thing to us; we write songs that we love and that we can rock out to. We have a pretty contemporary alternative sound crossing elements of punk with metal, and some catchy riffs and choruses that people can sing along too.

Lisa Lashes interview ahead of her Goodgreef Extra Hard gig @ 53 Degrees Febuary 5th!

Last time you were in Preston was 12 months ago-are you looking forward to returning?

It's always a great party in Preston and something I definitely look forward too. The crowds are always so responsive and up for a party so it's a pleasure to play there.

How have the past 12 months been for you?

With my 7 Lashes parties in the UK, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Holland, they have kept me very busy. I've played a few new territories and all the clubs have been great including the festivals and my debut back at Creamfields which I had missed for the last 5 years. Ibiza was brilliant as usual playing for Judgement Sunday's and my tunes have been getting some great radio play on Radio 1 with the help of Judge Jules and Kutski. 2011 looks to be an even bigger year for me with my musical style changing slightly which enables me to play different styles of music in my DJ main rooms set.

How do you think the Hard Dance Scene is faring at the moment?

There are definitely less events than there were 5 years ago but every event I've played over the past 6 months has been packed so it's still a very popular sound just with the current economic climate its harder for clubbers to go out every weekend like they used to!

What do you hope to achieve in 2011?

Want to do a few more lashed parties in the UK and Ireland and also we have another scheduled in for Amsterdam later in the year. My new techy trance tunes are being released on labels every 3 to 4 weeks going forward. Look out for releases on Discover Dark, Musical Madness, Spinnin, High Contrast and many more including my lashed label. I would love to hit the 100k mark for listeners on my podcast on itunes too-up to 70,000 so far.

Have you made any New Year's Resolutions?

I'm afraid not but I have been getting a little fitter helped by the fitness on xbox.

Travelling is a big part of your life. What's one thing that travelling has taught you?

Always leave for your journey way before you think you should. It's so stressful sitting in traffic when you know you should be checking in for your flight.

How do you find being a woman in such a male orienatated profession?

There are lots of women in the music buisness and I don't think it matters if your male or female if your good at what you do and work hard at what you want to achieve, it shouldn't matter which sex you are.

How do you cope with such gruelling schedules and late nights?

I'm used to it now and don't need much sleep, especially at the weekends. I do need at least 4 hours though else I'm a bit miserable as you can imagine.

How do you like to spend your time off?

When I do get time off, I try and visit my family and friends as this job doesn't enable me to see them very much. I like to have people over to mine for drinks and a catch up when possible.

Which up and coming Djs should we be looking out for in 2011?

What are your biggest tunes at the moment?

The tunes that are getting massive reactions on the harder floors at the minute are BRK3-FR33 (Jim Justice mix) on Tranzlation and Argy- Fridge magnet on Kiddfectious.

What can we look forward to from your Goodgreef set in Febuary? Any exclusives?

I always have exclusives in my CD wallet ready to bring to the party...There are so many great tunes out at the minute as all the dj's have been very busy in the studio over the last few months which is great for our scene.

It's a cowboys and Indians party.....will you be dressing up?

I will be dressing up but not in fancy dress, not my kind of thing.....Maybe I will pinch a feather to put in my hair so I'm not too much of a bore....

Reel Big Fish was one of the legions of Southern California ska-punk bands to edge into the mainstream following the mid-90's success of No Doubt and Sublime. Like most of their peers, the band was distinguished by their hyper-active stage shows, juvinile humour, ironic covers of new wave pop songs, and metallic shards of ska. The group cultivated an underground following that broke into the mainstream in summer 1997, when their single "Sell Out" became a modern rock radio and MTV favourite. Their appearence in the movie "Baseketball" as the halftime band also gained them more fans and helped the bands popularity to grow. They have continued releasing albums and touring relentlessly, playing more and more countries and bigger venues all over the world ever since.

The Skints

The Skints are a reggae/dub/punk fusion band from London. Since 2008 the band have toured extensivley supporting bands including, Less Than Jake, Sublime, The Slackers, Gogol Bordello and Bedouin Soundclash.

Have your say. At the end of the night, there will be 4 buckets to vote for your favourite band of the night. Simply drop your ticket in the bucket of the band you think deserves to win. The tickets will be counted and will contribute to the final score.

As with all 'Battle of the bands' we will have judges to judge the bands at each event. The twist this time is that the crowd will be an extra judge.

The Vaccines

'The Chinese whispers that preceeded the arrival of The Vaccines was something to behold. For about a fornight every 'in-the-know' music industry type I came across would speak of this mysterious new London rock 'n' roll outfit who were set to be the future of everything music. No one could resist losing their shit over them to anyone who would listen, but refused point-blank to let slip any details about who they were. Key members had been in other known bands, so the legend went, some were family members of notable acts, or something to that effect. iPod playlists had the artist name removed, or a comedy moniker stuck in. People were-probably justly- pertrified of the hype-mill getting out of control.

Finally the pieces of the puzzle came together. They're called The Vaccines, it's Jay Jay Pistolet and Tom from The Horrors' little brother, Freddie. They make indie rock 'n' roll that makes total sense after the biggest summer of sunny bubblegum lo-fi ever, but with something scorching and woozy sounding of it's own. It is ace and music is saved'

The Cold One Hundred

Preston / Manchester based band....with all the potential to break the mould of mundane new 'Indie Music'

First of all, they look the part, and the ladies certainly seem to like them- but so few seem to back it up with any substance. They do. The Cold One Hundered define themselves as 'dark pop' with influences raging from Bowie to Joy Devision, Richard Hawley to Nick Cave and maybe just a hint of The Smiths?

It is always hard to explain to people just how good a band are, and this is something I try to get across. This band will be hitting your ears in many forms of mainstream media at some point in the future, it would be a shame for so many people to miss out on this delight. So if you find yourselves with a spare 12 minutes, you should head along to their myspace and take a listen I promise, you will have found something special. Some have said "the best band to come out of Preston" well I suppose that isn't much, but it is a start......

The Underdogs

When they originally formed in 2005 the band cited Oasis as their main influences but their material has evolved somewhat. The five piece from Preston say they are now inspired by Coldplay, The Smiths and U2.

Recent comparisons have been to Arcade Fire, Pulp and REM which are all "Cool" with The Underdogs. The band are very particular about their output. "Unless the song excites us it wont leave the practise room. We're not interested in playing fillers and have extreamly high standards of what we think is good enough,"

Where would you like to wake up?
In Jake's Hotel, Teasure Beach, Jamaica, when a hurricane is in full force, the palm trees look like Native American Indians, in full feather headresses, the sea is vertical, and I drift into consciousness as it's blowing itself out.

Who would you like to wake up to?
My girlfriend, obviousl, but if I am allowed more than one person, I'd love Tina Turner to be somehow involved, ideally masturbating when we shag.

What would there be left to achieve on your last day?
I would seriously try to overdose on whatever Rasta weed, preferably lamb's breath grown in bat shit, is around. I have been trying for years, believe me, and it would be a fitting time to succeed.

Who would you have at your final dinner?
My girlfriend, my children, a few best friends, Bruce Forsyth, Tina Turner, Shaune Williams, and Bez.

What would you be eating?
Curry, definately. Most likely a cholesterol-saturated King Prawn Madras without tomatoes, proceeded by some Japanese blowfish and followed by strong Corsica cheese with fig marmalade and chocolate-coated scorpions.

What would you be doing that evening?
Listening to music such as Bob Dylan, Super Furry Animals and Crazy Horses; taking drugs and shagging. I would also be drinking Petrus Pomerol red wine, Chateay D'Yquem sweet white wine, and the best grappa.

What's the last album you would listen to?
'Between The Buttons' by the Rolling Stones, particularly the track 'Yesterday's papers', 'Connection', and 'Complcated'.

As the clocks ticks down, what would be your final regret?
That I didn't have any.

What will it say on your headstone?
'Stoned Forever.'

How would you like to be remembered?
I think I might prefer not to be remembered as long as it was due to universal short-term memory loss.

It feels like forever ago we were arriving in Austin for ACL. We've covered a lot of ground, played some great shows and made some new friends. So, many thanks to Social D and their crew, team Lucero (especially Justin and Mary), Casey and Craig and everyone who came to the show. Now for the UK tour!! "When it comes to music I have a hatred of apathy. "So says Lee Vincent, drummer of a band so far removed from the world of apathy that they even make a form of medieval tortue sound like a bit of a laugh. Pulled Apart By Horses have just started their very first headlining show across the UK.

It promisses, like all Pulled Apart By Horses shows, to be a night of sheer chaos. "I think in rock music we're sick of seeing bands that just stand there and look a bit bored. If you're not covered in sweat when you come off stage then you haven't done your job" he says. Bored just doesn't factor into the band's lexicon when it comes to performing. Since 2008 thry've consistantly and riotously laid waste to venues and festivals up and down the British Isles, and it seems like everybody is just starting to take notioce of the Pull Apart By Horses train wreck.

"Any kid that starts a band, this is your dream, to be playing music for a living. Don't get me wrong, it's not a great living but it's still.........this is what we do, and as your 'job' we get to play with amazing, huge bands" says Lee, full of honest disbelief that a project started for a bit of fun after the demise of previous bands now seems to have so much more momentum behind it. On the reputation of their live performances the band has achieved way more than could ever have been dreamt of in two years. Support slots for Biffy Clyro, Glassjaw and Muse prove that this is a band on an ever upwards spiral.

Everything about Pulled Apart By Horses' story is a direct result of an incredibly hard work ethic. This band perform with such intensity that they've ended up in hospital more than once. It's an attitude that alot of bands coming out of Leeds seem to share. "There's an affinity with people in Leeds if you're in a band, and that's a really healthy and positive place to start. Standards are high. It means that people don't fuck about. When you do your band, you really do it, and it shows if your not 100% committed."

Highflying British rapper 'Example' will be performing at 53 Degrees on Wednesday 23rd February 2011.

After storming the UK charts earlier this year with the infectious hit single 'Kickstarts', the artist has now teamed up with some of the hottest acts in the UK including MOBO Award winning Tinie Tempah, Chipmunk, Devlin, Professor Green and Giggs to collaborate on Tinchy Stryder's lastest release 'Game Over'.

Although the collaboration has undoubtedly increased Example's already cooler than cool reputation since the outstanding performance with Tinchy and the gang at this years MOBO Awards, the down too earth star from London has shown that fame has yet to go to his head. This week he embarks on the LiveandLost tour in association with Blackberry. The tour sees Example spending some up close and personal time with fans across the country. Given £20 to last the week, Example's task is to soley rely on the kindness of fans up and down the country to give him lifts, accomodation, food and basically look after him. NME 10 Tracks You Have To Hear This Week - The Vaccines, Pulled Apart By Horses

These are the sounds rattling around the skulls of the NME staff this week...

The Vaccines-'Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra)'
Oh, thank the fucking Lord and all the bastard angels, the bright new hype for British guitar music actually look like being a sensation. The Vaccines' debut is a short, sharp sugar-rush of a song. Starting off like 'Wolf Like Me' by TV On The Radio but then turns into The Strokes with a Sherbet Dip Dab shoved up the jacksies. All reverb-y singalong hey-hey-heys and no-no-nos, 'Wreckin' Bar...bounces along with guitars on full-speed-ahead, and is as memorably energetic a debut as 'Caught By the Fuzz' or 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'. But then, you should always leave'em wanting more.

And duly it arrives, for this is a double A-sided release. 'Blow It Up' is more downtempo, but it's chorus is such a high you may be sucked off into space. It sounds a little bit baggy with it's chiming guitars, melodic bass and belting chorus, but in place of pill-head dopeyness, there's a real grit here, as frontman Justin sneers, "I'm bored of trying to deal with your ego". A very excited debut release indeed. You'll be reading a hell of a lot about The Vaccines in these here pages over the coming months, if we can type through our grateful tears.

Howard Marks-"The most sophisticated drugs baron of all time" To be played by Rhys Ifans in new film

The man once described as "the most sophisticated drug baron of all time" has had many disguises.

But when it came to casting the lead in a film document the extrodinary career of Howard Marks, there was only ever one face that fitted-his good mate and fellow Welshamn, Rhys Ifans.

It also meant that shooting the movie, named after Howard's best-selling autobiography, Mr Nice, was a real excise in hedonism for two hell-raisers.

Howard, 61, says: "Rhys and I watched the film together-we were sat there holding hands because I was terrified.

"It's a surrealm experience seeing your life in film, but I shouldn't have worried, it's fantastic. Wonderful."

"Rhys is brilliant. I was seeing it all played out but witha much better-looking version of myself up there, what I could've looked like. How great is that?"

With a husky chuckle, he adds: "And there was a lot of fun to be had making it."

It gave the pair an excuse to indulge in, as Howard puts it, "a couple of benders".

Finding himself in weird situations seem to be a theme with Howard. A grammar school boy from a South Wales mining village, he dreamed of being a doctor. But when he won a scholarship to Oxford, he discovered cannabis-and then drug smuggling. Suddenly, everything changed.

He fell into a criminal career. As he puts it: "It happened and then I liked it".

Howard spent the next 20 yaers working an international smuggling ring, using 43 aliases, and running 25 companies and 89 phone lines. By the 1980's he was the most wanted man in Britian.

"It was an exciting, fast-paced way of living and I still miss that. I would have carried on untill I got caught-or died."

Cherry Ghost Tour Review

Cherry Ghost kick off their nationwide tour at the London Dingwalls. Shannon Andreucci was there for gigjunkie, who seemed to enjoy the show:

Pulled Apart By Horses

Formed in early 2008, Pulled Apart By Horses made a name for themselves very quickly with a string of energetic and chaotic live shows, which led later the same year to slots at the Latitude Festival and on the BBC Introducing Stage at the Leeds Festival. Here their performance drew a sizeable crowd, making them one of the highlights of the weekend for many and helping to spread their name even further.

They released a debute single, 'Meat Balloon', in October 2008 through big scary Monsters, followed by a string of other releases on various labels before signing to Transgressive earlier this year, releasing their debut album through the label in June.

Currently part way through tour dates which will take them through to the end of the year.

Q1 How did you start out making music?

I started making music from an early age on a four-track tape recorder. I sang about girls and my teen troubles. EMO!

Q2 What inspired your latest album?

Playing live shows, drinking, suffering from ADHD, art. And did I say drinking!?

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?

It's a melting pot that the four of us heat and throw ingredients into. Collective and combined.

Q4 Which artist influence your work?

The Jesus Lizards, That Fucking Tank, Nirvana, Radiohead, David Shringley and the 'Back to the Future' trilogy.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?

Please fasten your seatbelt, we're going to crash.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?

Find my inner being, tour the USA and find a fucking girlfriend.

Tinie Tempah a fan of Mary Byrnes from X-Factor!!

Tinie Tempah has claimed that Mary Byrnes was the stand out act from the opening X Factor live show.

Speaking on The Xtra Factor, the English rapper threw his support behind the Tesco checkout worker following her rendition of 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World'. The 50-year-old won a standing ovation and got the biggest audience response of the night for her performance.

Tempah revealed to host Konnie Huq that he would be happy to team up with the Irish singer after watching her in the studio. "Mary-she killed it." he said. "If we're talking swag, she's got it. Most definitely."

Fellow guest Spice girl Mel B added: "My favourite was Mary. She was incredible. She was having it. I loved it."

Tinie Tempah new album 'Disc-Overy' tops UK charts at No.1!

Tinie Tempah has followed his singles number one last week by topping the album chart with new release Disc-Overy.

The rap star's debut effort, which sold over 85,000 copies, denied The Script a third week at the top with Science & Faith, instead relegating the Irish band to the runner-up spot.

"On every single song you'll get a line that reveals what life was like for me. I recorded a lot of it after Pass Out went to No.1, so that gave me a chance to reflect on life before and after achieving success," says Tinie. "Going to No.1 gave me chance to consider how far I've come, but also how far I intend to go".

Frankie and The Heart Strings have told NME Radio they've hijacked Edwyn Collins son Will, taking him on tour with them as their merchandise seller.

Frontman Frankie Francis said the band have been recording with former Orange Juice singer Collins recently, and had met his son at the sessions. They've since taken him on tour with them across the UK.

"We've hijacked his son for the tour" Francis told Owen Davis. "Will came along to sell merch for us and summer camp. I don't know if his mum and dad knows that he is in Wales tonight but he's just kind of turned up an hour and a half ago"

Francis added that Will "is not going to be going out and getting himself into mischief" while on tour with the bands.

Kissy Sell Out has most definitely raise the bar in 2010. Described by Mixmag as 'One of the most exciting, charismatic and entertaining DJs of the decade.' FWAP! seconds that and will be bring him to grace the decks at 53 Degrees on Saturday 9th October.

Netsky has had a phenomenal year and has exploded onto the drum & bass scene, making him one of the most in demand DJs and producers in the world.

Fenech-Soler also burst onto the scene in 2010, making their mark in the U.Ks music scene. Their self-titled debute album has just been released and their tracks are receiving dytime Radio 1 play-Huge would be an understatement.

The Whip, a dance-rock act from Manchester, spent a few years working the indie electronic underground before making their full-length album debut in 2008 with X Marks Destination. The City of Preston has long awaited their return.....

D.O.D is FWAP!'s newly crowned resident DJ. At the age of just 22, D.O.D has recieved full two page spread about himself in the worlds biggest dance music magazine, MixMag. His technical ability behind the decks, energy and rythless style of DJing are all reasons why FWAP! are very proud to have him onboard.

CHERRY GHOST: Q & A!

Originating in 2005 as a solo project for frontman Simon Aldred, Cherry Ghost got an early boost in 2007 by becoming one of the few bands to appear on 'Later....With Jools Holland' before they'd actually released anything. Later the same year they released debut album 'Thirst For Romance', picking up an Ivor Novello award for the song 'People Help The People'. Album number two, 'Beneath This Burning Shoreline', was released in July to high acclaim, and the band kick off a month long UK tour tonight at Dingwalls in London. Ahead of the gig, we had a chat with Simon Aldred.

Q1 How did you start out making music?

We have all have served time in various half-baked outfits who are bigger on ambition than actual talent.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?

The desire to make something that was more representative of us as musician than our first album was. To craft something more cohesive and self contained.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?

Some songs are quite straightforward. I come in with a complete song, we play through it, decide on our parts, then record it together, live. 'Barberini Square' is a good example of that. Most of the new album ended up being quite a bit more complex than that through. we'd build the songs up in rehearsals from ideas I brought in, then I'd go away and finish it off and write lyrics, then we'd spend a week or two working on sounds, recording the parts and finalising the arrangements. some songs got further reworked in the mixing too. It took a long time.

Q4 Whish artists influence your work?

Everyone's taste are a bit different but things we agree on are people like Glen Campbell, Cole Porter for the strings, TV On The Radio, and we like The National, particularly for drum patterns. We listen to all sorts, though.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?

Listen to it on a proper stereo.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?

We'd like to do a European tour and get to America.

Frank Turner wants to break free!

On the eve of his opening for Green Day at Wembley this week, Frank Turner visited The Sun to perform the Queen classic, "I Want to Break Free." The song and band had a special significance to Turner who mentioned it when the show with Green Day was first announced:

The [Tribute to Freddie Mercury] was a major musical milestone in my life. My older sister made me watch it with her, and we taped the whole thing over a number of VHS cassettes (swapping them over as fast as possible so as not to miss anything). I was 10 years old, I’d just started finding out about music, but seeing Metallica, Guns n Roses, Spinal Tap (!) and a host of others playing Queen tunes was a major eye-opener for me. We watched those tapes till they broke.

Watch 'Slashed' - no budget horror from Ash!

When my sister and I were young, we made a series of short horror films*. They contained terrible acting, Boglins, references to other films (Star Wars, Aliens, Misery) and fake blood, and were loads of fun to make.

The only difference between our efforts and this music video for Ash's 'Binary', is that they had cameos from Coldplay's Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland...

The video was shot during the band's 2002 tour (which explains why Charlotte is with them) for a film that never got released, so the band have put it to the music from one of the tracks from their ambitious A-Z series (one single released every two weeks over the course of a year).

Basically they're a bunch of geeks and I can't wait to see them at 53° in July.
